Itinerary Overview
Encounter with Nature
This day is dedicated to those who adore animals or are travelling with family, especially children. Join us for a remarkable encounter with Costa Rica's wildlife at the country's foremost Zoo & Wildlife Rescue Center.
Established in 1990 under new management, the Rescue Center was reimagined with conservation and the welfare of animals as its core principles. Zooave, originally a small private zoo based in La Garita de Alajuela in the 1960s, focused mainly on wildlife export and exhibition. The transition to new administration marked a shift towards prioritizing a habitat offering better conditions and expanding over 36 acres next to the Itiquis River, which plays a critical role in the regional ecological corridor.
Today, the facility stands as a beacon of modern conservation efforts, prioritizing animal welfare, conservation, and environmental education as a non-profit organization. The park houses over 125 species, including birds, mammals, and reptiles. Many of these animals, unable to return to the wild due to various reasons, are provided with spacious enclosures designed to replicate their natural habitat, ensuring their wellbeing.
Guided by an expert naturalist, visitors will get to explore this unique project, set amidst stunning botanical gardens, gaining insight into the sanctuary's mission and the animals it protects. Nearby, the province of Alajuela offers a serene backdrop, located just beside San Jose, adding to the day's experience.
