Itinerary: Day 1
The Trout Fall is the largest and the most spectacular waterfall of river Þjórsá. It is also one of the most voluminous waterfalls in Iceland, with an average water flow of 360 m³ / sek. This relatively unknown but very spectacular and powerful waterfall is filled with beauty, making it an ideal place for photographers with its beautiful surroundings.
A picturesque waterfall irrigated by the river Seljalandsá, itself fueled by Eyjafjallajökull glacier, boasts an unusual height of 65m. One of the most popular subjects for photographers. As water flows overhang, it is possible to take a path that allows going behind the waterfall for a divine sight. You will discover the joy of sneaking behind the water curtain, feeling out of this world for a moment. Be dazzled by the magnificent site, the power of the water, and the beautiful rainbows created by sunlight and vapor droplets.
Also called Gljúfrabúi, this interesting waterfall is carefully hidden behind a narrow opening in the mountain. Discover the magical and intimate place, echoing the roaring sound of the falling water, which keeps the purity of a place out of time.
Skógafoss, one of the most popular and largest waterfalls in Iceland, offers a rare experience to get close to the base of such a large waterfall. Enjoy it from above as well, with a view from the top that is simply stunning. On sunny days, witness single or double rainbows formed by the powerful water splashing.
A popular branch of Mýrdalsjökull, one of the largest glaciers in Iceland, showcases the natural contrasts of the region: vast stretches of black sand and craters give a way to bright walls of white ice, with blue highlights – huge and majestic. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and dramatic rock formations shaped by the glacier, reflecting the perpetual struggle between fire and ice.
The name Dyrhólaey means door hill island in Icelandic, a curious rocky arm piercing with a shape that forms a door to the ocean. It is also a natural park, a sanctuary of birds, where many species especially the puffins can be observed. Admire the landscape of raw beauty formed by long beaches of black sand, the unleashed ocean, and rugged-shaped cliffs formed by a piling up of basalt columns.
This black sand beach is often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. From there, observe the Reynisdrangar, lava columns sculpted by the waters, emerging from the ocean. These dark and towering formations are the remains of cooled lava, according to legend, they are ancient trolls caught out of their caves.
Vík í Mýrdal is the most southerly village in Iceland. Its church, a white building with a red roof located on a hill, proudly dominates the modest houses. The ocean on one side and the imposing cliffs of Mount Reynisfjall on the other side. Its isolated location and magnificent environment have shaped the strong character of the village. The wind, the water, and time have carved the different rocky buildings that surround it, where nature lays down the law.
